The athleisure trend has been around these last few years but now more than ever, it’s more acceptable to leave the house in sweats and your comfiest, coziest gear. The perfect uniform for brunch, shopping, or running errands; the athleisure trend is ideal for going from gym to street.

My ATHLEISURE Must Haves
These are my athleisure staple items to complete any wardrobe. What I love about these pieces is that you can mix and match with other essential items in your wardrobe to change how you style these pieces.
- The Perfect Legging
- Not Your Mama’s Sports Bra
- The Tee
- Elevated Basics
- The Layering Piece
The Perfect Legging/ The Updated Yoga Pant
The legging is THE ultimate athleisure piece, to which I feel can be what really shapes the outfit. I believe in investing in a good legging, no, an AMAZING legging. My absolute favorite legging, is the Lululemon Align Pant. Lululemon’s nulu fabric truly is so soft, so buttery that it feels like you are wearing nothing. And since it’s not socially acceptable to not wear pants in public, wearing leggings that FEEL like nothing are the next best thing. The Align Pant also comes in a variety of lengths, colors, and prints so feel free to stock up, I know I have.
Whether it be a fun print or a trendy feature, yoga pants are no longer just black and boring. Let your bottoms be your statement piece and update your activewear with a more elevated pant. My favorite trends are rips, mesh, and lattice which also help with the air flow when you ARE working out so it’s a win win! I’m obsessed with these Ripped Warrior Leggings from Alo Yoga. Comfortable with a high rise, they give a cute distressed look while still holding you in. Another favorite of mine are Spanx Faux Leather Leggings. They hold you in, are crazy comfortable, and look like leather. And I am here. for. it.
Not Your Mama’s Sports bra
Sports bras don’t have be all about function and supporting your girls. Obviously, a sports bra needs to do just that, but I love making a statement with a fun sports bra. A fun print or pop of color under my tank or tee can be more of a subtle play or feisty on it’s on like this sassy bra from Beach Riot, the Twist Front Leopard Print Sports Bra. I also love a fashion forward silhouette, like a long line sports bra that in longer in length and looks fabulous when paired with high waisted bottoms. Like this strappy, Lululemon sports bra, the Free To Be Moved Bra.
THE TEE
I am ALL about a basic tee. Like your legging, everyone needs to invest in a yummy tee that just fits perfectly. The body should not be too fitted, not too boxy; in a soft fabric with an excellent hand and drape. So NO stiff cotton tees here. My favorite is the Lululemon Love Tee. In beautiful pima cotton with a flattering v neck, it’s my holy grail basic tee.
Elevated Basics
Speaking of basic. I love having a handful of basics that have a fun little twist, a little bit of extra. You always needs tanks and tees, but how a muscle tank crop top? I love a good crop top, especially with a high waisted legging. Or a tank with a split back that showcases your strappy sports bra. One of my favorite trends is a twist front or knot tee, like the Cover Tank from Alo Yoga. This look can also be achieved by simply knotted the front of your tee or tank.
The Layering Piece
A good item you can throw on before and after your spin class. Think oversized hoodie, like this Adidas Originals hoodie that I’ve over worn. Or a flattering french terry pullover, like this from Athleta, which can be dressed up or down. Or for a different look, I’m obsessed with a cozy cardigan or wrap, like this one from Athleta, the Pranayama Wrap.
How to STYLE: Athleisure
What I love about fashion is that there is no wrong way to do things. The below are my quick tips on how I love style athleisure pieces.
- Layers on layers on layers
- Dress up vs. Dress Down
- Accent with Accessories
Layers on layers on layers
To really take your look from yoga class to brunch, throw on an extra layer or two. My favorite layering pieces include:
- Jacket (Jean, Leather, or Bomber are my favorites)
- Fleece pullover
- Puffer Vest
- Cardigan or wrap
Dress up vs. Dress Down
Obviously when you think of athleisure, it’s on the more casual end of the spectrum, but it doesn’t always have to be. Mix and match these pieces with your denim. Swap out tennis shoes for heels. Throw on a leather jacket to add more texture to your look.
Accent with Accessories
Tie the look together with a fun athletic inspired accessory. You can’t go wrong with a baseball cap. A fun hair accessory adds a feminine detail to your look, I’m a personal fan of a good scrunchie. I’m also loving the comeback of belt bags, aka fanny packs.
What do you think of the athleisure trend?
